Artificial intelligence is a concept that is very complex. There is also a lot of debate around what actually makes up artificial intelligence. Many scientists see a future wherein robots may appear to embrace intelligence, complete with cognitive ability.
History has shown that we have wanted to create some sort of robotic servants from the beginning of time. Many inventors down through the ages developed robotic toys and appliances. Writers created and wrote about worlds filled with robots and intelligent machines.
The idea and theory behind robots with artificial intelligence, as well as the possible uses of such beings, is boggling. Some think that as machines become more human-like, they will be able to perform tasks that have only been able to be done by humans. There are also theories that this robotic artificial intelligence may provide higher cognitive abilities that could solve problems that humans have yet to solve.
Presently, research into robotics is splintered into many groups, most of which are seeing breakthroughs. One example is trying to develop a robot with legs that could give the robot the ability to climb stairs. These have been developed. However, there are still problems with robotic equilibrium. But perhaps the most challenging issue is the creation of a fully functioning mind.
There are many human cognitive skills that scientists have been trying to replicate in robotics. There have been some advancements in perception, learning, planning, and reasoning. The more difficult skills to replicate are creativity, self-awareness, emotion, social intelligence, and wisdom.
There is a lot of debate about how intelligent robots should be created. One faction says they should only mimic intelligence while others believe that true intelligence is not achievable. Others believe that if robots gained true intelligence, they could replace humans or otherwise be harmful to humanity in general.
